1915 - 1949![]() Staff Members Outside First Family Service Building 1917 - Name of organization changed to "Social Welfare Society". 1918 - Submitted a plan to the city for the hiring of first police woman. 1919 - Employed a nurse to work with tubercular patients. 1920 - Established and financed a free dental clinic. 1921 - Employed the first professionally trained social caseworker. 1922 - Initiated city-wide interest in a plan for a Council of Social Agencies which resulted in the establishment of the Lincoln Community Chest and the Council in 1923. 1925 - Developed a community plan for toys for needy children at Christmas. 1926 - Promoted the establishment of a Child Welfare Department. 1930 - Accepted the major responsibility for unemployment relief. 1935 - Employed the first psychiatric social worker. 1937 - Lessened its function of relief giving with the County Relief Office supplying direct relief. Began intensive social casework for more permanent rehabilitation of families and children with problems. Cooperated with the Junior League of Lincoln in its efforts to establish a Well Baby Clinic, gave intake service to the clinic and provided space for it. 1939 - Developed a plan for dental and medical care for children and a program for prevention of dental and medical problems. Appointed a committee to develop services for the mentally ill and for child guidance. 1940 - Surveyed the need for services for the blind which resulted in the development of a state-wide program for the blind. Society approved by the Federal Children's Bureau to place and supervise British refugee children. 1942 - Provided space for the Public Health Nursing Service. 1945 - Changed name to Family Service Association of Lincoln. 1948 - Financed a plan to pay for tonsillectomies for school children. 1949 - Provided office space for Child Guidance Center and a plan to share a therapy room for children. Coordinated KFOR Operation Santa Claus with all community agencies so that all needy children might have a new toy of their choice at Christmas. Became a National Travelers Aid Cooperating Representative. |
